EdQual's Objectives

To develop an understanding of education quality in low income countries by:

1. developing quality indicators that are relevant to the needs of disadvantaged learners in difficult delivery contexts.

2. designing, piloting and evaluating the impact of new, practical initiatives in the area of education quality.

3. identifying examples of effective practice in implementing education quality by evaluating existing initiatives.

4. determining effective practice in mainstreaming education quality policies and initiatives.

We will achieve these objectives through our research projects:

School effectiveness and education quality in Southern and East Africa

Implementing curriculum change to reduce poverty and to increase gender equity

The use of ICT to support basic education in disadvantaged schools and communities in Low Income Countries

Literacy and language development through primary education

Leadership and management of change for quality improvement

We are also running three smaller projects:

Designing school buildings as development hubs for learning

An assessment of the NEPAD e-school initiative in the promotion of community health and poverty reduction in Kenya and Rwanda

Developing index for inclusion in Tanzania

In addition we sponsor a number of PhD students whose research topic is related to one of our projects.
