When schools function and when they don't - a visit to primary schools in Tanzania.

Visiting primary schools and talking to headteachers about their initiatives to raise the quality of their schools, one is impressed by the competence and patience of these remarkable professionals, often working with limited resources and room for maneuvre.
In a whistle stop tour over three days in August, (Angeline Barrett)  visited seven schools in Tanzania whose headteachers are participating in action research initiated by EdQual's Leadership and Management project. One school was located in the near Mlandizi in Kibaha rural district, two in Korogwe town, Tanga Region and the remaining four in Tanga city. Most head teachers had decided to research the issue of truancy in a bid to improve how they meet the needs of learners most at risk of dropping out . Two schools are looking at teaching of mathematics in the higher years of primary education.  Read More
